Section Description

The heterosexual marriage plot may be our most familiar narrative form, but American literature has a great deal to say about less celebrated forms of sexuality, as well as non-normative gender identities. This course draws on novels, images, poetry, essays, and historical materials, to consider such topics as adultery; reproduction; transgender and intersex people; race and sexuality; “free love”; obscenity; incest; first-wave feminism; and lesbian, gay, and bisexual experiences. Literary authors include Hawthorne, Melville, Dickinson, Hopkins, Douglass, Fuller, Whitman, Craft, Alcott, Chesnutt, London, and Cather.

Evaluation

One essay (12-15 pages), 20 short reading responses, and regular attendance and active participation.
