Section Description

This class is designed to introduce students with and without previous musical experience to basic piano technique, music notation (including melodic lines, basic chords and a range of note durations) scales, chords, rhythm, sight reading, repertory, and harmonization. While this class is open to all students, it can count as one of the two required piano classes for the Music Technology and Business major. Music majors with little to no previous piano experience can elect to take Beginning Group Piano, but it is also required for music majors who don’t pass the Group Jazz Piano I/Piano Proficiency I placement test. Students who take and pass Beginning Group Piano are qualified to take either Group Jazz Piano I (required for jazz performance majors and one of the options for fulfilling one credit of the two-credit MTB piano class requirement) or Piano Proficiency I (required for the Music Education major and one of the options for fulfilling one credit of the two-credit MTB piano class requirement.).

Section Expectation

Students are assigned to learn one to two short pieces or exercises for each class (pieces tend to be around sixteen measures long). While most assignments involve a specific piece, periodically assignments are given where students are able to choose from a range of options.

Evaluation

Students receive scores for attendance in each class, depending on factors like timely arrival and/or timely communication in the event of absence. Playing assignments are graded on a scale of 1 to 10 for accuracy of notes, chords and rhythms and steadiness of tempo, as well as for attention to articulation (particularly legato) and dynamics.
