Section Description

This course offers an intensive, performance-based exploration of small-ensemble jazz. Students collaborate in assigned weekly combos to develop advanced skills in group interaction, stylistic versatility, and spontaneous improvisation. Coursework emphasizes practical musicianship, requiring substantial individual practice outside of class to master core repertoire, chord-scale relationships, and harmonic progressions entirely from memory. Repertoire spans standard jazz literature, including bebop, modal, post-bop, and Latin idioms. Active listening, dynamic blend, and rhythm-section cohesion are prioritized during weekly rehearsals. Public performances, including on-campus recitals and end-of-semester showcases, are required components of the course.

Section Expectation

Attendance at all rehearsals is mandatory. Practice and prepare weekly songs and assignments. Arranging and notation assignments.

Evaluation

Preparedness, participation, attendance, improvement and development during the semester.
