Section Description
We are living in a sea of religion and empire, imperial religions, and religious imperialisms. In Religion & Empire, a seminar, we will trace the definitions of religion as they relate to, were impacted by, and fostered the expansion of empires and imperialism. While we will begin in the 19th century—imperialism’s height in both power and intellectual categorization and development—we will also attend to contemporary iterations of empire, including the American landscape. Topics will include: history of religion; definitions of religion; race and racialization; gender; colonialism and imperialism; theories of power; violence.
Section Expectation
1) gain a critical understanding of models and definitions of empire and religion (i.e., acquisition of key nodes in critical theory)
2) observe and analyze how implicit models of religion and empire interact with each other in contemporary events, non-textual sources, digital/social media, etc. (i.e., interpretation of new data in light of theory)
3) apply theory and interpretation skills (and those developed in earlier REL classes) to a critical research paper
Evaluation
research paper; discussion leading; discussion participation; reading/research notebook
