Section Description

SPAN 2100 is a 3 credit, first semester intermediate Spanish course that focuses on building students’ ability to communicate successfully in the target language. To achieve this goal, the course introduces new vocabulary and grammar structures and reviews other ones covered in elementary levels. It also works to improve students’ reading, writing, speaking, and listening comprehension skills. The course will be taught in Spanish.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

-Utilize new vocabulary about social relations, city life, media, family life, and the environment in a variety of speaking and writing tasks.
-Respond in writing and orally to prompts/questions using present, past, future, and conditional tenses and the subjunctive
-Review verbs like gustar, ser/estar, reflexive verbs, por/para, pronouns, and commands.
-Give advice/recommendations using commands and the present subjunctive.
-Converse and express opinions about a variety of issues and topics relevant to you and your community.
-Listen to and comprehend content from extended conversations
-Read and comprehend authentic and more sophisticated texts about cultural, social, and personal topics.

Within three months prior to enrolling in your first language class at UVM, you need to take the online placement test (even if you haven't studied the language) and enroll in the recommended course. If you enroll in a class without taking the test, or enroll in a class below your recommended level, the system will disenroll you from the course.

Section Expectation

The University of Vermont respects the Department of Education’s definition of a credit hour. For every hour spent in class, you are expected to spend approximately 2 hours outside of class. Thus, in SPAN 2100, a 3-credit course, you should plan to spend about 6 hours a week outside of the classroom preparing assignments and studying.

Evaluation

Grades are based on exams, homework, quizzes, writing assignments, attendance/participation, and an oral exam.
