Section Description

Long before the technology of artificial intelligence was developed and large language models became pervasive in daily life, science fictional texts depicted machines that simulate human intelligence. This course will consider texts from the 19th century to the present in order to explore concerns about and interest in artificial intelligence and the human-machine interface. These stories imagine and depict intelligent machines as a means to considering human labor and its potential alleviation or proliferation, production and consumption (along with the related concepts of power and control), subjectivity and subjection, posthumanism, and capitalism. Readings will include classic science fiction like Philip K. Dick’s _Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?_ and Isaac Asimov’s _I, Robot,_ along with more contemporary depictions of artificial intelligence like Kazuo Ishiguro’s _Klara and the Sun_.
