Section Description

Food is everywhere in our lives, but the systems behind it are often invisible. How does food get from farms and processing facilities to supermarkets, restaurants, and our plates? Who has the power to decide what food is produced, how it is produced, and who has access to it? In this course, we will uncover the social, political, economic, and environmental forces shaping the modern food system. We will examine questions of power, food safety and quality, inequality, sustainability, and consumption while exploring the roles of government, science, corporations, media, and culture. Along the way, students will learn to use the sociological imagination to see everyday food choices in an entirely new way.
