Section Description

The Novel Salon is an in-depth, discussion-based evening seminar that brings students together with published novelists to learn about the craft and process of novel writing. Students will read six novels and assorted supplemental essays, write four craft annotations, lead discussion with guest authors, and submit 25-30 pages of a novel for an intensive workshop. An expansion or revision of the novel sample will be due in exam week. Our guests are Katherine Arden, M.T. Anderson, Makenna Goodman, Daniel Mason, and Bailey Seybolt, among them National Book Award and Booker Prize nominees, NYT bestsellers, and literary, fantasy, thriller, historical fiction, and experimental writers, which means we will also be having a side conversation about novel form and genre all semester. Recommended prereqs: NaNoWriMo or Writing Fiction.
