Section Description

In this course we will examine the origins and effects of regulation on economic outcomes. The course will begin with a discussion of the various theories that have been advanced to explain why governments regulate firms and markets. We will then analyze a variety of historical and contemporary case studies of particular regulations. Throughout this course we will ask: (1) why did regulation arise? (2) what impacts did regulation have on economic outcomes? (3) who gains and who loses as a result of regulation?

ECON 2400, 2450, and STAT 1410 are PREREQUISITES for this class. It is also advantageous for students to have a knowledge of econometrics (EC 3500).
