Section Description
Course Description
Musical theatre dance is an evolving art form that blends movement, storytelling, music, and performance. Through studio practice, readings, discussions, and viewings, students will investigate the artists and choreographic traditions that shaped twentieth- and twenty-first-century American musical theatre.
The majority of class meetings function as a performance laboratory. Students will develop dance technique, conditioning, movement vocabulary, musicality, and expressive performance skills while exploring the stylistic contributions of influential choreographers and genres. Historical and cultural contexts will be examined alongside practical application.
Class sessions generally follow the structure of a professional dance class and include:
Warm-up and conditioning
Technique development
Adagio and center work
Across-the-floor progressions
Jumps, turns, and traveling sequences
Choreographic combinations and performance studies
Students are encouraged to develop both technical proficiency and an authentic artistic voice.
