About MATH 2500 OL1

Survey of the fundamental concepts of linear algebra necessary to describe the solution space of a linear differential equation and for solving systems of linear differential equations. Credit not awarded following receipt of credit for MATH 2522 or MATH 2544. Prerequisite: MATH 1234. Co-requisites: MATH 1248 or MATH 1242.

Notes

Prereqs enforced by the system: MATH 1234; Coreq: MATH 1248 or 1242; Open to Degree and PACE students; Asynchronous online System waitlisting enabled for this section.

Section Description

After completing this course students will be able to:

•Ability to solve a system of equations, when possible, using Gauss-Jordan elimination.
•Understand the basic ideas and properties of matrix algebra.
•Ability to find the determinant, when possible, of a square matrix and determine what it measures.
•Ability to find the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a square matrix.
•Understand the basic structure of vector spaces.
•Understand the idea of linear independence.
•Ability to find a basis for a vector space.
•Understand the idea of a linear transformation between vector spaces.

Required Course Materials: Online Homework Access

You will need an access code for WebAssign online homework. The access code can be purchased directly from WebAssign once the course Brightspace page is open.

There is a free trial period (about 14 days, I believe) for WebAssign. I recommend taking advantage of the free trial period before purchasing anything. Once you purchase access to WebAssign, it is completely non-refundable.

Students will be expected to spend 2-3 hours per week on this class. This includes watching instructional videos and doing homework.

This class is offered remotely asynchronously. There is no need to travel to campus to take any of the quizzes or exams.

Evaluation

Grades will be based on several homework assignments (unlimited attempts).
