About LAT 2200 A
Selections from Vergil and Ovid. Prerequisite: LAT 1200 or equivalent.
Notes
Prereq: LAT 2100; Colocated with LAT 3100 PACE students with permission and override Total combined enrollment = 25
Section Description
Selected Latin readings Vergil’s Aeneid. We will also read the poem completely in English. This way the micropscopic perspective of close reading will be complemented by a larger overall vision of the poem, which well represents the poetics of the Augustan period. Students will also learn the essentials of hexameter composition.
Section Expectation
Students should have a good grasp of Latin morphology (all the endings of the 5 declensions and four conjugations) and the basic grammatical constructions (including use of subjunctive). Daily attendance and participation expected.
Evaluation
50% Daily translations. You will turn in a translation of each assignment, not on the day that assignment is due, but the following (or as soon afterwards as possible). This will give you the chance to make corrections on the basis of class discussion/analysis, and prepare a final copy. Your grade will be based on a random selection of these translations at the end of term. Those who do not turn in every assignment cannot get higher than a C for the class.
25% Participation: readiness to translate when called upon; contributions to close reading and discussion of the text.
25% Midterm and Final on English reading both poems.
