Section Description
ASCI 1040 is an introductory course in general nutrition designed for students with little or no prior training in nutrition. The course is lecture-based and covers the scientific principles of nutrition, with a focus on the six major nutrient classes: carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals, and water. The goal of the course is to provide a comprehensive understanding of nutrients, including their availability, functions, and utilization in mammalian species. Because all mammals require a similar array of nutrients, the course is taught from a comparative nutrition perspective, integrating both animal and human nutrition rather than focusing exclusively on either discipline.
IMPORTANT: If you are an Animal Science or Animal Studies major, you are also required to register for the corresponding lab course, ASCI 1990, when enrolling in this course.
Section Expectation
Have fun, enjoy the class, and make the most of the learning experience! Attend all sessions and actively participate in all in-class activities.
Evaluation
Grades will be based on exams (60%; three mid-term exams, and one cumulative final exam), knowledge checks (30%), and participation (10%).
