Section Description

This course offers hands-on practice designing, implementing, and critiquing ESOL lessons for adults with various learning levels, contexts, and purposes. It is meant to conclude the TESOL Certificate Program by providing a transition from theory to practice. An important part of this transition is the development of versatility as an emerging ESOL practitioner. We will therefore be learning how to adapt to the dynamics of the teaching situation—working across subjects (primarily reading and writing), tailoring our teaching methods to particular learners and constraints, and selecting appropriately leveled, culturally sensitive, and situationally practical texts. We will also learn how to balance the customization of ESOL instruction with generalized teaching practices geared toward all learners, such as UDL (the Universal Design for Learning). In addition, we will learn how to implement SOTL, the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, to lend more scientific rigor to our growth and self-awareness as future educators.

Section Expectation

With consistent, hard work, students in this class should be able to:
-Assess different teacher/student relationships, including potential sociocultural challenges and conflicts of interest
-Cater ESOL teaching methods to particular audiences and purposes
-Appropriately level ESOL lessons (especially in reading and writing) for specific adult populations
-Learn the basics of lesson plan formatting and design
-Choose texts that are affordable, accessible, and geared toward the needs and backgrounds of diverse ESOL learners
-Integrate aspects of UDL, including multiple means of engagement, representation, and action/expression, in ESOL lessons
-Survey the range and effectiveness of ESOL assessment options for reading and writing
-Collaborate successfully with co-instructors in a team-teaching environment
-Analyze ESOL lessons, both in writing and discussion, based on situational and universal concerns for teaching/learning
-Offer professional feedback on ESOL instruction following peer observation
-Integrate SOTL as an emerging ESOL practitioner
