Section Description

This course offers a guided exploration of dance improvisation designed to foster a personal movement vocabulary, foster spontaneous group interaction, and heighten individual and ensemble awareness. Through a series of structured movement prompts and somatic exercises, students will develop creative risk-taking skills, expand their physical expression, and learn to compose collaboratively in real time.

Section Expectation

To succeed in this course, students are expected to maintain an open mind and engage actively with both physical and theoretical practices. You will be held to the following expectations:

Chronological Progression: Commit to a learning arc that begins with developing individual improvisational skills and steadily progresses toward creating and presenting more complex ensemble structures.

Physical Engagement & Embodiment: Acknowledge that all classes are movement-based. Students are expected to show up ready to physically explore new possibilities for embodiment, actively working to expand their strength, stamina, balance, fluidity, and deep body/spatial awareness.

Creative Engagement: Engage willingly in improvisational dance scores and informal in-class showings, cultivating both individual presence and supportive ensemble responsiveness.

Critical Reflection & Attendance: Complete all assigned academic readings and writing tasks to understand the significance of improvisation in the postmodern era, and attend designated live dance performances outside of scheduled class time.
