Section Description

Private jazz piano lessons focus on repertoire from various eras of jazz, typically focusing on tunes from the swing and bebop eras, but also including tunes in styles such as ‘hard bop’, ‘post bop’, ‘Latin’ (bossa nova, samba and son clave) and modal. Within each tune, students study the essential jazz skills of melody interpretation, melodic improvisation, chordal accompaniment aka ‘comping’ and returning to the melody with variations. Students learn how these skills have been demonstrated throughout jazz history by studying recordings and transcriptions of the playing of great jazz pianists such as Duke Ellington, Mary Lou Williams, Bud Powell, Wynton Kelly, Herbie Hancock and Patrice Rushen. Classical repertoire may also be studied as it relates to jazz playing.

Section Expectation

Students work from a practice list that is created by agreement of the teacher and the student and are expected to practice three hours each week for a one-credit, half hour lesson and six hours each week for a two-credit, hour-long lesson.

Evaluation

Students receive scores for attendance at each lesson, performance in each lesson and performance in a final playing exam. For the final playing exam, students can choose between playing for the teacher in a one-on-one setting or playing in a group final which, although it is graded, happens in an informal and supportive atmosphere.
