Section Description
SPAN 3110, "Migrant Tales" carries the CCC designations WIL2 and GC2. In this course, students will explore the relationship between countries and those who cross their borders through stories in writing, music, art, video and film. Students will analyze these stories through the lenses of historical perspective, legal and socioeconomic conditions, personal reflection, and cultural comparison. These different stories and perspectives will form the basis for an exploration of the geographical, cultural, and human connections among people on different sides of national borders and in general of the migrant experience, but mainly in relation to the United States.
Section Expectation
This class is based on written texts, film and video, music and web communication tools, writing, and discussion. A primary objective of this class is the acquisition of Spanish at the level of Intermediate-High for speaking and Advanced for reading and writing. Students should have a good grasp of intermediate Spanish grammar at the beginning of the semester, and more advanced grammar topics will be studied in order to achieve greater precision in written and oral communication. This is a writing-intensive course with emphasis on expanding students’ expressiveness and precision in both writing and conversation. Students can expect to spend 6-8 hours per week on coursework outside of class, with additional time for projects and presentations.
Evaluation
Grades will be based on attendance and participation, discussion board assignments, research assignments, short papers with revisions, in-class writing, oral exams, short presentations, and a final written and oral research project.
