About NR 2100 OL1
Focuses on the types of oral communication common in environmental professions, with a focus on an environmental issue that students adapt communications for throughout the semester. Designed to teach students common frameworks for effective science communication and stakeholder engagement, while providing opportunities for students to expand their oral communication, critical analysis and listening skills for a variety of audiences and purposes.
Notes
Asynchronous online course focused on digital environmental communication formats. One on one online meetings with course instructors required throughout the semester.
Section Description
This section is offered in a fully online, asynchronous format with a focus on digital communication while maintaining a strong emphasis on oral communication. Students learn to translate environmental science into clear, engaging, and audience-centered messages using video, social media, and other digital formats. Through a series of applied assignments, students build a portfolio of real-world communication products, including short videos and digital storytelling pieces commonly used in environmental outreach and advocacy.
Section Expectation
Students engage in weekly asynchronous modules that combine readings, short lectures, and applied practice. The course requires consistent self-paced learning, time management, and active participation in peer discussions and feedback. Students should expect to regularly create, revise, and refine video-based communication assignments and contribute meaningfully to ongoing online discussions. Strong engagement and steady weekly progress are essential for success.
Evaluation
Grades are based on a combination of weekly quizzes and practice assignments, participation in peer feedback and discussion, and three major digital communication projects. These include a short news explainer video, a platform-specific awareness video, and a short documentary-style piece. Assessment emphasizes clarity, audience engagement, effective storytelling, and strong oral communication in video formats, with opportunities for iteration and improvement throughout the semester.
