Focuses on developing skills for strategic public health leadership, with an emphasis on interprofessional collaboration and systems thinking. Students will design and implement effective public health initiatives, including strategic planning, data-driven decision-making, community engagement, and social entrepreneurship. Prepares students to lead impactful and sustainable improvements in public health organizations and systems.

Section Description

This course develops foundational doctoral-level public health competencies in strategic management and leadership for public health organizations, emphasizing systems thinking, interprofessional collaboration, and organizational change. Students examine how strategic planning, data-driven decision-making, community engagement, and leadership contribute to improving population health. They will complete applied case studies and practice-oriented assignments to learn to evaluate complex public health challenges, design strategic plans with measurable goals and implementation timelines, assess program effectiveness using quantitative and qualitative data, and develop approaches that promote equitable participation in public health decision-making. The course also explores conflict resolution and the integration of social determinants of health into strategic initiatives. By the end of the course, students will be prepared to create strategic plans, evaluate public health programs, facilitate shared decision-making, develop organizational change strategies, and propose innovative solutions that improve population health while integrating the perspectives and expertise of key community stakeholders.

Section Expectation

This course combines lecture and discussion formats. Students should expect to spend 6-8 hours a week on coursework outside of class per University policy regarding work required for a three-credit hour course.

Evaluation

Grades are based on discussion participation, knowledge checks, and written assignments.
