Study of diatonic melody and harmony, phrase structure, and elaborative techniques. Music majors are required to take MU 2311 concurrently. Prerequisite: MU 1310 or equivalent music theory fundamentals proficiency, determined by placement test. Co-requisites: MU 2311 is required for Music majors and encouraged for all enrolled in MU 2310.

Section Description

This course is designed to cover basic tonal harmony, including elementary voice leading and phrase structure, with an emphasis on fluency. MU 2310 is a prerequisite for higher-level theory courses and for some other upper-level courses.

Section Expectation

Students should begin with basic knowledge of notation and elements of music theory as determined by the department placement exam. Anyone needing more support may be referred to MU 1310 (Music Theory Fundamentals). Concurrent enrollment in Class Piano or private piano lessons is not required, but strongly
recommended. Concurrent enrollment in Harmony and Form Lab I is required for all music majors, except for MTB majors who began prior to Fall 2021. Non-majors and upper-class MTB majors are also encouraged to enroll.

Evaluation

Grades will be based on attendance and participation as well as composition projects, worksheets and drills that will be assigned regularly throughout the term. There will be two written exams, one final project, and one final exam.
