Section Description
The University of Vermont Symphony Orchestra is a 90-member ensemble of university students and community members. The orchestra is composed of students who have majored in a diverse range of subjects, and it performs one to two times a semester, presenting an array of baroque, classical, romantic, and twentieth-century pieces. All university students who play an orchestral instrument are invited to join. The required audition is used to familiarize the conductor with each musician's strengths and weaknesses and is not used to evaluate or determine section seating. The seating will not be based on the ranking of the audition.
Rehearsals: Tuesday, 7:00-9:30 PM
Concert: Saturday, November 14, 2026
Section Expectation
Assignments and Reading: Students are expected to work each week outside of rehearsal, including practicing instruments (assigned parts of the repertoire listed below, etudes with relevant technical and musical elements, and/or solos), listening to professional recordings, and discussing with peers. Students are expected to perform with correct notes, articulation, dynamics, rhythm, and appropriate style, and to further learn and review previous weeks’ work on their own time. Expectations: Students are required to attend every rehearsal and performance. Students are required to practice the part and maintain the highest level of performance. Students are expected to be proficient enough on the instruments, as instruction in how to play them will not be given during the rehearsal.
Evaluation
Evaluation will be based on attendance and preparations for the rehearsals and concerts.
