About THE 2160 A
Provides students with a sound foundation in the craft of musical theatre performance. Instruction guides students to connect vocally, emotionally, and physically to musical materials that reflect various historical periods and styles of musical theatre. Prerequisite: THE 1100.

Section Description
In this course, we will focus on the repertoire and history of the American musical theatre canon while honing aspects of performance such as vocal technique, acting through song and partner work. We will utilize a variety of texts, delving deep into context and form to explore the genre from multiple angles. The course is designed as a chronological examination of impactful musicals as both radical interrogations of culture and forays into long-held performance traditions. With the culmination of the course, students should feel confident in their approach to the musical theatre canon as scholars and practitioners.

• Develop an understanding of American musical theater canon and its historical context from 1927-2022.
• Observe and support personal theatrical curiosities.
• Hone skills specific to musical theatre performance such as singing, breath work, movement and scene study.
• Reflect on the entertainment traditions of this country and in what they are rooted.
• Demonstrate an ability to take risks and celebrate vulnerability.
Evaluation
This course will utilize in-class work. Any assigned work should be prepared prior to the start of class. This includes but is not limited to:

Responses, readings and production analysis should be expected and completed outside of class time.
