Public Health: Culminating Project Experience (OL1)

Section Description

PH6920 Culminating Project Experience is a project-based course where students apply what they have learned in earlier MPH courses to examine a public health research topic. The course includes both individual and team components and takes place in the fall and part of the spring semester. Students are provided with a dataset at the start of the course and, supported by a mentor and the course faculty, they develop, implement, and write-up a public health research project. In the fall section (3 credits) the focus is on the group project and each group member is matched to a team role, for example project manager or lead writer. In the spring semester (2 credits) students develop individual write-ups related to their topic using a data analysis provided to them by the instructors. By the end of the course, students will have written an individual paper and contributed to a team manuscript, both in the same general topic area (e.g., breast cancer screening, food insecurity in people with asthma, others). Towards the end of the spring semester students present their work in a virtual research poster session, with many of the posters going on to be presented at local and national conferences, and some are converted into peer reviewed publications.

Course Objectives
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
1. Conduct a thorough literature review
2. Develop a public health research question that is important and builds on existing research
3. Design measures and develop plans to analyze data
4. Analyze data to answer a public health research question
5. Write and present a scientifically meritorious brief report (formatted for a peer reviewed journal) and scientific poster

Section Expectation

• Credit Hours: 3 hours (fall), 2 hours (spring)
• Fully on-line; some synchronous work required (for team project)
• Pre-requisites: PH 6010 Public Health and Health Policy, PH 6020 Epidemiology I, PH 6030 Biostatistics I, PH 6070 Epidemiology II (can be taken concurrently with fall semester of PH6920)
• All learners must have devices with speakers, headphones, camera, or cell phone to hear audio recordings and to create and post course materials.

Evaluation

Grades are based on satisfactory and timely completion of assignments and participation in the group project. There are no mid-term or final exams.
