Section Description

This is the second of a two-part series in epidemiology required of all Master of Public Health (MPH) students. This course helps students gain a deeper understanding of key epidemiologic concepts focusing on interpreting results from epidemiologic studies. This course covers more advanced concepts in epidemiology and biostatistics that build upon material presented in Epidemiology I and Biostatistics I.

The course will review concepts introduced in Epidemiology I, such as study design, bias, and confounding. In addition, Epidemiology II introduces advanced concepts such as survival analysis, effect modification, and interpreting results from regression models with multiple variables, using statistical software.

The content of this course is relevant for all those seeking to work in public health. It arms students with the knowledge about epidemiological study designs for practical use. This knowledge will help students be scrutinizing consumers of the public health and medical literature whether pursuing epidemiology or some other area of public health as a career.

Course Objectives
The overall objective of this course is to expand upon the foundational knowledge of
Epidemiology and Biostatistics.

By the end of the course, students should be able to:
• Describe the differences between and advantages of common epidemiologic study designs
• Evaluate the source, level, and result of bias and confounding in a given study
• Demonstrate basic skills in using a statistical software program (SPSS)
• Interpret results from data analyses using statistical software and make statistical inferences for public health research, policy, or practice
• Interpret the influence of confounding variables
• Interpret the influence of effect modifying variables

Section Expectation

It is expected that you will spend at least 5-10 hours per module on the readings, lectures, assignments and other work for this class.

Evaluation

Grades are based on problem sets, SPSS lab assignments, journal article responses, discussion board participation, and three exams.
