Course Description:
Welcome to Developmental Biology, one of the most dynamic and intriguing biological disciplines. In this course we will let the embryos guide us, consistent with comments by one of the field's early experts, Victor Hamburger, who said, "Our real teacher has been and still is the embryo-who is, incidentally, the only teacher who is always right."
Section Expectation
Course Learning Objectives:
• Acquire foundational knowledge in Developmental Biology emphasizing the cellular and molecular events that regulate formation of the body plan;
• Recognize the experimental design and tools used by Developmental Biologists to study the processes of development;
• Use course content to think critically about questions in today’s society.
Evaluation
Assessment and Grading Policies:
Exams: There will be four in-class exams that will focus on the main concepts presented in class. They will be short answer/essay format and 100 points each. There will be no make-up exams without prior arrangement.
In class assignments: Several chapters have Case Studies associated with them or other in class assignments. These are designed to get you to think critically, be creative and discuss ethics. Each assignment will be worth 15 points.
Diversity in Development: It is important to highlight Developmental Biologists that bring diversity to our field. For this assignment you will need to identify a Developmental Biologist that has brought a diverse perspective to the field (BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, etc). There will be a single Power Point slide (template provided) for you to create as well as a half page description of their scientific contribution. The Power Point slides will be displayed in Marsh Life Sciences throughout the academic year.
