Section Description
Resort Marketing and Management focuses on marketing in the service sector of the broad tourism, hospitality and related recreation industry, with emphasis on marketing resorts (the lodging sector of the tourism industry). The class also integrates operational and managerial aspects of resorts. Through class sessions, guest speakers, and field trips (3), students gain a broad knowledge of marketing and management in the hospitality business. The Term Project requires students to participate in a 24-hour hands-on Work Experience at an area hospitality business, from local full-service hotels to nearby ski resorts. The Term Project is in addition to class time. A comprehensive Marketing Portfolio is due at the end of the semester (replaces a final exam).
Section Expectation
Students are expected to attend class, contribute to class discussion, and complete the comprehensive Marketing Portfolio. The Portfolio consists of selected important aspects of the marketing process and is created over the course of the semester, with a final Portfolio due at the end of the term. Student time into the class is estimated at 4 - 6 hours each week, outside of class plus the term project. The reading for the class is a comprehensive custom text, which will be posted on BrightSpace.
Evaluation
Grades are a mix of attendance and participation, the multi-component assignment package, the term project, a midterm exam, and the final Marketing Portfolio.
