Section Description

This is an introductory, one-semester, online lab course in chemical herbalism. General, organic, and biochemical topics and methods relevant to medicinal herbal chemistry will be covered. An introduction to body systems, herbal actions, medicine making, harvesting/storing, seed saving, and the history of herbalism are also covered. There is no textbook associated with the course. Information will be freely shared as a variety of instructor written notes (PDFs) and links to external sources via Brightspace. There is an online lab simulation component for the course, which will be synced with our Brightspace course page. An access code for this online platform will need to be purchased by the student. Supplies associated with the wildcrafting practicum component will need to be purchased by the student. All course related materials are listed in the syllabus, along with suggested places to source them.

Section Expectation

This course is offered online, asynchronously, with a course schedule listed on the syllabus. Students may work at their own pace within a unit of material. However a student chooses to pace themself, is expected that they will complete assignments by the due date listed on the syllabus and as announced on Brightspace.

Evaluation

The course will cover material presented as a compilation of instructor written lecture notes and medicine making procedures (home grown lab manual), links to outside herbalism sources, and simulated lab techniques. Students will be evaluated by a variety of quizzes, writing/drawing (creative) samples, discussions, case studies, and a hands-on practicum.
