About EXSC 2200 A
Develops students' basic evidence-based practice knowledge and skills, and applies findings to their practice as health and wellness professionals. Topics addressed include evidence-based practice research methods, research study design, basic statistics, and evaluation of research evidence as they apply to clinical practice and decision making. Prerequisite: Exercise Science major.

Section Description
This course will provide a foundation for the Exercise Science student by offering an overview of the field as well as the associated health and human performance professions. Students will gain an understanding of evidence-based practice (EBP) research methods, various research study designs, and evaluation of research evidence. Students will learn how to develop a research question, search scientific literature, and critically appraise the literature to make evidence-based decisions in practice. By the end of the semester, students will be informed consumers of research and understand how EBP guides health and human performance professionals. Course Objectives By the end of this course, each student will be able to: 1. Explain the process of EBP and how it is used in the field of Exercise Science. 2. Distinguish the type and quality of evidence and various research designs. 3. Describe the requirements for conducting research. 4. Develop the skills necessary to create research questions, search for-, and evaluate scientific evidence. 5. Interpret and summarize research articles. 6. Describe the importance of research in developing and maintaining EBP.
Section Expectation
Lecture slides, assignments, and readings may be posted on Brightspace or distributed in class. Any course material (lecture slides, case studies, etc…) distributed within this course are for the use of students currently enrolled in EXSC 2200. Course materials may not be reproduced, published, or transmitted electronically without proper consent (see instructor for details). Students will be expected to obtain and utilize public, scientific resources (besides those solely delivered in class) to complete various assignments throughout the course. It is expected that students will arrive for class on time. Students are responsible for material discussed and covered in class and are responsible for obtaining any material missed for any reason. This course will meet in-person and include lectures, discussions, guest speakers, and an EXSC student panel. To successfully complete this course, you must accomplish the course objectives as demonstrated through various assignments. Specific guidelines for each assignment will be provided. Coursework Outside of Class: Per University policy regarding work required for a three credit hour course, approximately two hours of coursework should be completed outside of class for every credit hour. Therefore, that means that for this three credit course, at least six hours a week of work are expected outside of class.
Evaluation
To achieve the course objectives, a variety of activities relevant to the course objectives will be assigned throughout the semester. These activities may include but are not limited to reflection questions, guided readings, group work, and article summaries and will occur both in-class and out-of-class. It is expected that students will be prepared for class. Assignments complementary to the course content will be posted on Brightspace and/or assigned in class. These activities are to review and/or prepare you for material covered in class and are also meant to assess your understanding of the material.
