Section Description

***This class will meet weekly at the Humane Society of Chittenden County at 142 Kindness Court, South Burlington, VT, 05403 (about 3 miles from campus).*** This is a civic learning course, meaning that students are learning while volunteering to help their community. Students are expected to be at the shelter on time and in appropriate clothing. Depending on enrollment numbers, students may be assigned a shift within the window of time that the course meets (likely 12:00-1:30 or 1:30-3:00, though you may not be able to select your shift) to be at the shelter. During their time at the shelter, students can expect to work hard - work which may involve getting dirty. The ability to work in contact with animals and follow directions are essential (direct contact with animals is likely but not guaranteed). While the shelter we will be at will only euthanize animals if it is in the best interest of the animal or for the safety of the community, students should realize that they may interact with animals that could potentially have that outcome. This course is suitable for students with no experience in an animal shelter, as it will focus on the basics of what it takes to run an animal shelter and the role of animal shelters within the community. Students with experience in animal rescue are welcome, but must realize that this course is geared towards an introductory level.

Section Expectation

This course does not take place in a typical classroom environment; students will take on the role of volunteer in an animal shelter during this course. The exact tasks students will complete will vary from week to week, but cleaning, enrichment preparation, managerial duties, and other types of animal care may be expected. Students will also likely be assigned mandatory supplemental resources (such as videos, articles, and podcasts) to complete outside of class time and expected to be able to discuss this content during class. Students can expect to spend up to six hours outside of class time on this class, per University policy regarding work required for a three credit hour course.

Evaluation

Students will be evaluated on their participation and engagement. Projects completed outside of class time may also factor into the grade.
