Section Description
The Vermont Legislative Research Service (VLRS) engages students in non-partisan policy research for Vermont state legislators. Students from all majors and minors work in research teams under the supervision of Professor Anthony Gierzynski (Director of the VLRS) and Professor Jonathan "Doc" Bradley to produce policy reports in response to questions submitted by Vermont State Legislators. To become a VLRS Student Researcher for either section apply here: https://qualtrics.uvm.edu/jfe/form/SV_eONmJTg7ixmtiaG.
Section Expectation
There will be two sections of the VLRS for the fall 2023 session--Dr. Bradley's which will focus on environmental and energy issues and Dr. Gierzynski's which will focus more broadly on other legislative issues such as health, education, criminal justice, safety, finances, democracy, and government operations, and whatever else the legislators request information on. To become a VLRS Student Researcher for either section apply here: https://qualtrics.uvm.edu/jfe/form/SV_eONmJTg7ixmtiaG. Working for the VLRS requires you to put your skills and knowledge to work for the State of Vermont while acquiring research tools (VLRS students in good standing in the fall will receive priority application status to continue this work as interns in the spring 2024 session). Students are expected to learn how to find and evaluate policy-related material and distill that material into reports for Vermont state legislators as part of a 3-person research team.
Evaluation
Students are evaluated based on: 1) how well they learn to find and judge policy-related materials 2) the reports they produce for legislators, and, 3) their ability to work as part of a research team.
