About GRK 1200 A

Fundamentals of fifth-century Attic (Athenian) Greek, in preparation for reading great works of Thucydides, Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, Aristophanes, Lysias, Plato, Aristotle, Demosthenes, Homer, Herodotus, Sappho, Pindar, New Testament, and more. Prerequisite: GRK 1100 or equivalent.

Section Description

This course represents the second semester of a two-semester introduction to ancient Greek. Spoken throughout the ancient Mediterranean, Greek remains an important language for accessing its ancient texts and cultures. Students will be introduced to the grammar, syntax, and vocabulary of Attic Greek in Athens during the Classical Period. Classes will consist of lectures, activities, and short introductions to ancient Greek culture.

Section Expectation

Learning any language, and ancient Greek in particular, requires constant and diligent effort. Students are expected to prepare readings and assignments for each class, attend an additional weekly meeting of the language lab, and prepare for quizzes and exams.

Evaluation

Evaluation is divided somewhat equally across Attendance (class & language lab), HW assignments (graded for completion), weekly quizzes, and three summative exams given over the course of the semester.
