Section Description
We are currently witnessing a resurgence of the horror film. This course will attempt to understand the reasons for this and its implications. It will consider why horror is so popular, what role it plays in society, why we enjoy fear, and what other psychological responses viewers have to horror. The course will also delve into the history of horror, and we will see a wide variety of films from The Night of the Living Dead, to The Shining, to It Follows. Students will also investigate the genre through various approaches such as feminism, critical race theory, queer theory, Marxism and psychoanalysis. Ideas such as the uncanny, the role of desire, fear, the role of nightmares, and fantasy will be key concepts we turn to in order to help us engage the genre. The course will also consider the cultural implications of many types of horror tropes and characters.
