Section Description
Along with gourmet food and high fashion, France and the French language are often associated with love, sex, and romance. In French Kiss, we will explore this association through the study of selected French texts in translation and French films. To what extent is the stereotype that French is the language of love reflected in (or find its origin in) these French cultural productions? Students will do close readings of texts and complete writing assignments to critically analyze topics such as transgender identity, adultery, consent, love triangles, prostitution, and women’s agency.
Section Expectation
This is a discussion-based course. Students should expect to spend 6-8 hours a week on coursework outside of class. All texts are in English.
Evaluation
Grades are based on attendance and participation, online discussion board posts, quizzes, short papers, and a final paper.
