This course emphasizes all four language skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing, plus culture. Classes will be taught in French. Upon completion of French 1200, students will be able to: • Demonstrate knowledge of a second language and an awareness of how language shapes culture, • Recognize the influence of cultural norms, customs, and traditions on ways of knowing and/or being in the world and use this understanding to inform cross-cultural interactions, • Engage in simple conversation on familiar topics necessary for survival in the target language, • Give personal information, state simple opinions, and discuss activities, preferences, and immediate needs, • Understand predictable messages found in public spaces, • Express past actions and future events, • Be sensitive to and respectful of cultural differences, • Write simply about common, discrete elements of daily life, • Recognize key words and cognates while engaging in the reading of non-complex texts (literary or other) in the target language, and derive relevant information from them, and • Have an enhanced knowledge and appreciation of French-speaking communities and countries around the world.
