Section Description
French 1200 is the second course in a two-semester sequence of beginning French. The course is designed for students who have successfully completed French 1100 at the University of Vermont. (Students who have studied French elsewhere and have taken the French Placement Exam may enroll if their score indicates that this is the appropriate level.) This course emphasizes all four language skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing, plus culture. Classes will be taught in French. Upon completion of French 1200, students will be able to: • Demonstrate knowledge of a second language and an awareness of how language shapes culture, • Recognize the influence of cultural norms, customs, and traditions on ways of knowing and/or being in the world and use this understanding to inform cross-cultural interactions, • Engage in simple conversation on familiar topics necessary for survival in the target language, • Give personal information, state simple opinions, and discuss activities, preferences, and immediate needs, • Understand predictable messages found in public spaces, • Express past actions and future events, • Be sensitive to and respectful of cultural differences, • Write simply about common, discrete elements of daily life, • Recognize key words and cognates while engaging in the reading of non-complex texts (literary or other) in the target language, and derive relevant information from them, and • Have an enhanced knowledge and appreciation of French-speaking communities and countries around the world.
