Section Description
JAPN 3990 is open to students who have completed intermediate Japanese 2200 or equivalent, and are interested in translating various forms of Japanese language content, including literary texts, manga, anime, video games, song lyrics, music videos, television shows, and film. We will investigate the various modes of translation, including localization, subtitling, fansubs, and scanlations. The class will primarily be conducted in English, but we will be discussing various texts and audio-visual material in Japanese. The focus will be on strategies for dealing with translation and localization puzzles and conundrums in creative ways, with the goal of fostering awareness of how our translation choices are shaped by context and target audience considerations. The course is designed to introduce low-advanced and advanced Japanese language learners to a variety of texts and forms of translation genres as a way to expose students to the particular translation-related challenges for each genre and to provide a broad base of knowledge from which to develop a practical and theory-based understanding of translation work.
