Section Description
The practice of yoga was first intended to be a practice of engaging the body in order to understand and affect the mind. It would have been considered the psychology of the day. Today, it's yoga therapists who lead experiences and teach practices and skills that most closely emulate the original intention of yoga. This course is intended to be an introduction to the philosophy, application, and practical outcomes of yoga therapy. The curriculum will also include related modern science and emerging research. Students will have the opportunity to learn and embody this approach to mental health and wellness and reflect on its application and relevance in their own lives. It will be a powerful self-study and empower students with skills and tools to support their own emotional regulation, stress management, self-advocacy, and overall wellness. Course goals and objectives include: 1. Students will gain an understanding of the philosophy and application of yoga therapy and how it relates to contemporary science and is relevant in the present. 2. Students will develop the ability to understand and work with the nervous system to manage their state of being. 3. Students will learn and apply therapeutic tools like movement, breathwork, and mindfulness to support their self-regulation, stress management, empowerment, and sovereignty.
Section Expectation
The class is designed to be interactive. 15-25 minutes of each class will be lecture/conversation, 45 minutes will consist of a therapeutic embodied experience (usually yoga), the remainder of the class will be incorporate opportunities for journaling, dyads, or triads, and a final circle facilitation and integration. Students will be expected to complete a short, virtual check-in between weeks 3 and 6. Students will be required to maintain a personal record of their process and reflections throughout the semester which will be used to generate a final reflection to be submitted before the last day of class. Students will be expected to provide feedback about their experience via an online form at the end of the term.
Evaluation
S/U GRADING. Grading is weighted heavily on participation and attendance. Students will be required to complete their check-in and submit their final reflection to earn a passing grade.
