About BHSC 2400 A

Provides a broad based understanding of the fundamentals of radiation science including the ways in which radiation is produced and utilized, the principles of radioactive decay, radiation exposure, absorbed dose, shielding and detection of radiation. Prerequisite: MATH 1212 or MATH 1234. Co-requisites: RADT 2520 or Instructor permission for non-majors.

Section Description

This course will introduce you to the fundamental principles and properties of ionizing radiation, radiation biology and radiation protection. The goal of this course is to provide a broad understanding of a wide range of aspects covering the topic of ionizing radiation. These aspects range from radiation physics, x-ray devices to the biological effects of radiation exposure and to radiation protection of the technologist and patient.

Section Expectation

Grades, Exams and Quizzes: There will be 2 midterm exams, quizzes and a final exam given for this course. Quizzes will be short and generally given at the start of class and should only take about 10 minutes to complete. If you are late for class and a quiz is in progress, you will have until the end of the quiz period to answer as many questions as possible. Quizzes will generally be unannounced. Quizzes and Exam material will come directly from the reading materials, homework, and instructor provided PowerPoints. Students will work in groups to review quizzes and homework.

Evaluation

Final course grade will be determined according to the following percentages: Attendance and participation 5% Quizzes, homework and assignments 10% 2 Midterm Exams Exam 1 22.5% Exam II 27.5% Comprehensive Final Exam 35% Letter Grades will be assigned according to the following scale: 97-100 A+ 87-89 B+ 78-79 C+ *70-68 D+ 93-96 A 83-86 B *75-77 C *64-67 D 90-92 A- 80-82 B- 71-74 C- *60-63 D- *59 or less F
