About MATH 2001 A
Project-based course. Historical development of mathematical sciences emphasizing interrelations among them. Individual assignments correspond to background and interests of students. Prerequisite: Nine hours of college mathematics.

Section Description
The goal of the course is to explore the history of mathematics. At the end of the course, each student should be able to describe major developments in mathematics both with respect to various cultures as well organized by topics such as number systems, algebra, geometry, trigonometry and calculus. In addition to connecting mathematics to areas of human endeavor such as astronomy, students will learn how to solve concrete problems arising from the cultures explored.
Section Expectation
This course will be lecture-based with discussions and worksheets interspersed. Students should expect to spend 6-8 hours per week on coursework outside of class, with additional time for the major paper. There will be a required textbook. Additional materials will be made available.
Evaluation
Grades are based on essay and problem assignments, quizzes, a major paper, possibly a midterm, and an open-book final exam.
