About MATH 1224 E
Techniques and applications of integration. An introduction to multi-variable calculus: partial derivatives and double integrals. Prerequisite: MATH 1212 or MATH 1234.
Notes
Prereqs enforced by the system: MATH 1212 or 1234; Open to Degree and PACE students
Section Description
Fundamentals of Calculus II is the second course in our two-course applied calculus sequence. Fundamentals of Calculus II is a continuation of the study of the calculus of functions of one variable as well as a study of multivariable calculus. This will include area between curves, integration by parts, basic differential equations, separation of variables, solving first-order linear differential equations, improper integrals, continuous random variables and probability, functions of several variables, partial derivatives, maxima and minima of multivariable functions, Lagrange multipliers, and double integrals. This basically covers chapters 6 – 11 of the textbook. Topics will be presented with a level of depth and rigor appropriate for students pursuing degrees in business, economics, social and life sciences. Please speak to the Department of Mathematics and Statistics if you are unsure if you are taking the correct calculus course. Pre-requisite: Math 1212 Fundamentals of Calculus I or Math 1234 Calculus I This course satisfies the MA: Pure Mathematics requirement of the Catamount Core (new curriculum). It also satisfies the QR: Quantitative Reasoning general education requirement (old curriculum).
Section Expectation
Required Materials: Access to MyLab Math for the duration of the semester. Access to MyLab Math can be purchased from the UVM Bookstore or online directly through Pearson. We will be using the textbook Calculus for Business, Economics, Life Sciences and Social Sciences, 14th Edition, Barnett for this class. The purchase of MyLab Math includes access to the eTextbook so there is no need to purchase a hardcopy of the textbook. Calculators: You will need a non-phone-based calculator for this class. It doesn’t need to be fancy, but it should be able to handle exponents and logs. A graphing calculator is helpful IF you know how to use it but is not necessary. Calculators are allowed on all quizzes and exams. Calculators can NOT be shared during quizzes and exams.
Evaluation
Grading: Homework (on MyLab Math, typically one homework per section) 15 % Quizzes (weekly quizzes, due on Fridays) 20 % Participation/iClicker/Attendance 10 % Midterm Exams (two midterms) 30 % Final Exam (cumulative) 25 %
