Notes
Prereqs enforced by the system: MATH 1212 or 1234; Open to Degree and PACE students
Section Description
Fundamentals of Calculus II is the second course in our two-course applied calculus sequence. Fundamentals of Calculus II is a continuation of the study of the calculus of functions of one variable as well as a study of multivariable calculus. This will include area between curves, integration by parts, basic differential equations, separation of variables, solving first-order linear differential equations, Taylor Polynomials and Tayler Series, improper integrals, continuous random variables and probability, functions of several variables, partial derivatives, maxima and minima of multivariable functions, Lagrange multipliers, and double integrals. This basically covers chapters 6 – 11 of the textbook given below. Topics will be presented with a level of depth and rigor appropriate for students pursuing degrees in business, economics, social and life sciences. Please speak to the Department of Mathematics and Statistics if you are unsure if you are taking the correct calculus course.
Section Expectation
Required Course Materials: Online Homework Access Code (which includes a digital eText) You will need an access code for MyMathLab online homework, which includes access to the eBook version of the text. The access code can be purchased with or without a hardcover textbook; note that only the access code is required. Option #1: Minimum Requirement --- Choose this from the UVM Bookstore MyMathLab: Calculus for Business, Economics, Life and Social Sciences with ebook. ISBN 0135960983 • This is the stand alone Access Code for MyMathLab, which includes everything that is required. If you would like a printed textbook in addition to the homework access code and ebook, choose the following bundle instead of the minimum requirements described above. Option #2: More than Minimum --- Choose this from the UVM Bookstore Calculus for Business, Economics, Life and Social Sciences with MyMathLab and ebook. ISBN 0134862635 • This includes a hardbound textbook and the Access Code for MyMathLab. Per University policy regarding work required for a three credit hour course, students should expect to spend a minimum of six hours outside of class time each week on course work.
Evaluation
Grades will be based on homework assignments (~ 3 per week), weekly quizzes, 2-3 midterm exams, and a final exam. Quizzes and/or exams may have an online component in addition to an in-class hand written component.
