Section Description

The course is designed to give an introduction to the ideas, ethics, and legal issues of coaching. This takes into consideration the perspectives of coaching recreationally, amongst all age levels from youth to adult, and as a career and profession. Following the bi to tri-weekly modules of this course, the student will experience a variety of knowledge in the field of coaching and learn many important components to guide them to understanding the legalities and safety measures of coaching. The student will look into the whole world of legal issues of coaching, moral issues, community communication, league rules and guidelines, safety precautions, and even interpret real case studies. This will also encourage the student to think about their own style of coaching and the direction they may want to take it in. The course will include a variety of teaching tools, including assigned readings, quizzes, slide presentations, discussion postings, article reviews, essay papers, and reflections. Topics that will be covered include foundations of coaching, juggling jobs and juggling life, winning versus player development, academic ineligibility, legal issues including Title IX and NCAA compliance, proper communication with school officials and the community, and safety precautions. Student will dive into real ethical dilemmas that occur in the coaching world and be asked to choose sides and back it up with evidence.
