Section Description
This course is an introduction to the diverse field of speech and language pathology and audiology, including speech, language, swallowing and hearing disorders in children and adults. This course differs from many in the major because it focuses on the disorders rather than normal structures and processes. Therefore, it may become closer to what you had in mind when you began thinking about a major in communication disorders. The purpose of this course is not to make you an expert on each communication disorder we study this semester, but to expose you to the vastness of this topic. This introduction will provide you with some familiarity when you encounter communication differences and disorders in various settings such as work environment, in the community, and within your family. We will not cover every speech and language disorder nor speech and language assessments and treatment in detail. Course objectives include 1. Define communication, 2. Compare and contrast communication difference vs. disorder, 3. Provide examples of a disorder of speech, language, hearing and swallowing, 4. Identify three ways of classifying a disorder, 5. Describe impact communication disorder has on a particular individual and that individual’s family
