Broad overview of most important facts and principles of organic and biochemistry and interrelationships between these branches of chemistry. Credit not awarded for both CHEM 1150 and CHEM 1152, CHEM 1580, or CHEM 1582. Prerequisite: CHEM 1100 or CHEM 1400.

Section Description
This is a one-semester survey of organic chemistry and biochemistry, with about equal time spent on the two disciplines. Covered in the organic chemistry portion are organic functional groups, organic reactions, and nomenclature systems based on these functionalities. The biochemistry portion covers essential biological molecular structures and systems such as carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids.
Section Expectation
This course combines a lecture format worth 80% and a lab component worth 20% of the total. In addition to attending lecture, students should expect to spend 3-4 hours per week in consistent study and problem-solving. Solving recommended text problems is the best way to do this.
Evaluation
Students will be evaluated with three mid-term exams, a final exam, and an online (BrightSpace) quiz average, as well as a lab component of the course.
