Biology: The Human Body

For nonscience majors. Introduction to basic human anatomy and organ system physiology emphasizing normal homeostatic mechanisms and the changes that accompany common disorders and diseases. No laboratory. Credit not awarded for both BIOL 1155 and BIOL 1150.

This is an introductory level presentation of a life science course, designed primarily for non-science university level students. We will be covering some of the same material that might be found in a general introductory biology course, and/or a Human A&P course, but at a more basic level. Topics to be covered will include; basic chemistry, cells, most body systems, some general, human, and molecular genetics, cancer, as well as body defense against disease. At the end of the course, you should • Be familiar with the Scientific Attitude and approach to discovering the associations that exist in the natural world. • Have a general understanding of the biochemicals and energy transformations that support life. • Have a basic picture of the structure and function of cells – the basic unit of life. • Understand the concept of Homeostasis, and the role of different body systems in the process. This should assist you in understanding and consulting with your health care professionals. • Have a reasonable command of the role of genetics (inheritance), both general and molecular, in human health and disease. This should better prepare you to interpret the studies and claims made in the common press with respect to new “discoveries” and “medical breakthroughs”.

This is an online and asynchronous course. However, there are intermittent and scheduled assessments. In order to participate you MUST obtain the publisher supplied eText/Learning/Lab program. There will be text readings, instructor supplied notes and video presentations that should be accessed for each topic. The timing and duration of effort for these activities will be not unlike an "in-person" course.

The course will be divided into 4 "topic sections". Each section will have an assessed "Homework" component and an Exam.
