About CHEM 1582 A
Properties and reactivity of organic molecules of technological and biological significance. No laboratory. Not recommended for pre-medical students. Credit not awarded for both CHEM 1582 and CHEM 1150, CHEM 1152, CHEM 1580, CHEM 1500, or CHEM 2580. Prerequisite: CHEM 1100 or CHEM 1102 or CHEM 1450.

Section Description
This is a one semester survey of some of the foundational principles of organic chemistry including bonding, hybridization, resonance theory, isomerism, conformations of cyclic and acyclic alkanes, stereoisomerism, chirality, optical properties of stereoisomers, and implications for living organisms. In terms of functional group chemistry, the course covers, nomenclature, reactions of and ways to synthesize alkenes, alkynes, arenes, halo alkanes, alcohols, phenols, ethers, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, esters, amides, acid chlorides, anhydrides and amines as well as the corresponding mechanisms for these reactions. Section Expectation
All labs must be completed in order to pass the course. Attendance for all lectures and exams is expected. All work must be completed by the due date. The final exam must be taken to pass the course.
Evaluation
Students are evaluated based upon their performance on mid semester exams, a final exam, laboratory work, and homework quizzes.
