Section Description

Welcome! This course is designed for students with a solid understanding of the intermediate to advanced Japanese language. Students will read extensive amounts of authentic Japanese texts throughout the semester in preparation for their future interaction in real-life situations and to further their studies in Japanese. Course materials, other than the required textbook on fast-reading, will be chosen according to students’ needs and interests. The primary goals of this course are: 1) to develop students’ reading skills; 2) Express your opinions and ideas; 3) Comprehend the listening materials and conversations in class; 4) Use reference sources; and 5) to encourage students to become autonomous learners by becoming actively engaged in their own learning through setting their own learning goals, looking up what they don’t understand (words, grammar, cultural backgrounds, etc.), and using Japanese proactively. These will prepare students for their future interaction in real-life situations and further studies in Japanese. The textbook will be the 2nd edition of 速読の日本語 (Rapid Reading Japanese [Second Edition]: Improving Reading Skills of Intermediate and Advanced Students). The book cover is blue, not red. Learning Objectives and Outcomes: At the end of the course students will be able to: [読む] 1) have enhanced reading skills and the ability to comprehend content of a variety of authentic Japanese texts such as train timetables, menus, newspapers, and short stories; 2) develop the ability to extract required information quickly; [書く] 1) express their opinions and ideas on the subjects covered in class, including newspaper articles, speech assignments, project topics, and short novels in writing; 2) write a coherent project paper using critical thinking; [話す] 1) express their opinions and ideas on the subjects covered in class, including newspaper articles, speech assignments, project topics, and short novels in oral production; [聞く] 1) understand most of what the instructor and the classmates are saying and presenting; 2) comprehend most of the listening materials of the novels without looking at the text; [リサーチ] 1) use a variety of reference resources to complete their project and other class assignments.

Section Expectation

Class attendance and active participation are crucial to improving your language skills. The two absence will not count. The grade for the course will be lowered from the next absence onward. If you become sick, use this free absences. If you have a reasonable excuse for your long-term absences, contact the Dean’s office and write an e-mail to your instructor by the end of the day of the missed class. Your participation will be graded regularly, based on your performance in class activities. Make sure to do your assignments so that you are prepared to participate in class. Your absences, including the free absences, will affect your grade on performance.
