Introduces decisions related to the design, management, and improvement of activities that create and deliver a firm's products and services. Prerequisites: BUS 2130 with a minimum grade of C-, BUS 1610 with a minimum grade of C-; Business Administration, Engineering Management, Computer Science & Information Systems major, or Business Administration minor; minimum Junior standing.

Section Description

The course examines manufacturing strategies, with emphasis given to operations management, supply chain management, and quality management. Students, upon successful completion of this course, will have the knowledge, skills, and abilities to understand the role of manufacturing and service operations from the boundary-spanning perspective of supply chain management, how supply chain management can be used as a strategic competitive advantage, articulate how the various components of a manufacturing strategy are integrated, and effectively apply operational and quality tools useful in implementing manufacturing strategies.

Section Expectation

The course intends to provide students with the ability to: • understand the role of operations and supply chain management in the overall strategy of the firm, and their interdependence with other key functional areas of the firm, • identify and evaluate critical factors and the interdependence of these factors in the design of effective operating systems, • recognize the managerial tradeoffs involved in operations decisions, • identify and evaluate a range of tools appropriate for analysis of operating systems of the firm, and • understand the application of operating management policies and techniques to the service sector as well as manufacturing firms.

Students may be evaluated in the form of Quizzes, HWs, Exams, and projects.
