About STAT 5000 A
Introductory design and analysis of medical studies. Epidemiological concepts, case-control and cohort studies. Clinical trials. Students evaluate statistical aspects of published health science studies. Understand the relevance of published public health research to clinical practice. Credit not awarded for both STAT 5000 and STAT 3000. Prerequisite: Graduate student or Instructor permission.

Section Description
STAT 5000 introduces students to epidemiological concepts and biostatistical methods required to understand published public health research and to begin to design studies to answer health research questions. Students will be able to: • Use appropriate measures to summarize the distribution and impact of disease in a population • Use appropriate measures to summarize the relationship between exposures and health outcomes • Distinguish between epidemiologic study designs and evaluate their strengths and limitations • Use appropriate statistical methods to perform basic data analysis for epidemiologic studies • Evaluate how bias, confounding, and random chance may contribute to relationships between variables • Interpret and communicate the results of published public health research
Section Expectation
This is listed as a "Hybrid" course because there is an OPTIONAL in-person meeting each week for discussion and practice with the material. However, students who wish to take the course entirely online will be able to do so asynchronously.
Evaluation
Grades will be based on: Weekly Reading Quizzes, Weekly Homework Assignments, Midterm Exam, Final Project, Participation.
