Section Description
This course examines the intersection of literature and cinema, specifically the texts of J. R. R. Tolkien (The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit) and their cinematic adaptations. We’ll look closely at texts by Peter Jackson, Ralph Bakshi, and Jules Bass and compare passages from the novels with scenes from the films. Scholarship on The Lord of the Rings and on film/adaptation theory will deepen and enrich our investigations. Students will be expected to bring Tolkien’s texts to class in order to make comparisons. Students should watch the films in their entirety before the term
